This is lying down on the verge of sound sleep. This is one of the four indeterminate mental factors among the mental factors (caitasika). It renders a person unfree; its nature is dullness and obscuration, and its activity is obstructing and defiling. The Sūtra on Inspiring the Pure Mind states that sleep has twenty kinds of faults and perils: first, indolence; second, heaviness of the body; third, impurity of the skin; fourth, roughness within the skin; fifth, foul turbidity of the primary elements and diminished authority and virtue; sixth, indigestion of food and drink; seventh, sores and blisters on the body; eighth, much sloth; ninth, increased delusion; tenth, weak wisdom; eleventh, weariness toward wholesome desires; twelfth, constantly heading toward darkness; thirteenth, people do not respect one; fourteenth, having a foolish constitution; fifteenth, abundant afflictions; sixteenth, finding no joy in the wholesome; seventeenth, decrease of pure qualities; eighteenth, much fear and alarm; nineteenth, seeing vigorous practitioners and insulting them; twentieth, being despised and scorned by the assembly. The Daśabhāṇavāra says: 'If one snores (han is pronounced han), one should take note to practice walking meditation; if one cannot, sleep in a secluded place and do not annoy the assembly.' The Mahāsāṃghika says: 'If a bhikṣu snores, shakes, or talks in his sleep at night without an intent to disturb, there is no offense.'
