顯揚聖教論云。讀誦經典和敬師長。修承事業。瞻侍病患。互起慈心。請問聽法。精勤無墮。於諸聰慧同梵行者。躬自供事獎勸他人修行善品。及為宣說深妙之法。入靜密處結加趺坐○大般涅槃經云。常修七事。一歡悅和諧。猶如水乳。二常共集會。講論經法。三護持禁戒。不生犯想。四恭敬於師及上座。五料理愛敬阿練比丘。六勸化檀越。修營三寶住處。七勤加精進。守護佛法。若比丘行此七法。功德智慧。日就增進。

The Treatise Revealing the Noble Teaching says: 'Reciting scriptures; harmoniously respecting teachers and elders; cultivating and undertaking duties; attending to the sick; mutually giving rise to minds of compassion; inquiring and listening to the Dharma; being energetic without indolence; in the presence of wise fellow practitioners of the pure life, personally serving them, encouraging others to practice wholesome qualities, expounding the profound and subtle Dharma for them, and entering quiet and secluded places to sit cross-legged.' The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'Always cultivate seven things: first, be joyful and harmonious, like water and milk; second, constantly assemble together to expound and discuss the scriptures and Dharma; third, protect and uphold the prohibitive precepts without giving rise to thoughts of violating them; fourth, revere teachers and elders; fifth, care for, love, and respect araṇya monks; sixth, encourage and transform donors to build and manage the dwellings of the Three Jewels; seventh, vigorously exert diligence to guard and protect the Buddhadharma. If a monk practices these seven dharmas, his merit and wisdom will increase day by day.'
