法句經云。惡言罵詈憍凌篾人。興起是行。嫉怨茲生。遜言順辭。尊敬於人。棄結忍惡。嫉怨自滅。是以言語者。必使己無患。亦不剋眾人。是為能善言也。

The Dharmapada says: 'Evil words, reviling, arrogant contempt, and slighting others—giving rise to such conduct causes jealousy and resentment to flourish. Modest words, compliant speech, and showing respect to others—abandoning resentment and enduring malice causes jealousy and resentment to cease on their own. Therefore, in speaking, one must ensure no harm to oneself and no oppression to the multitude; this is being able to speak wholesome words.'
