3.224

雜阿含經云。佛在舍衛國。目連見一大身眾生。比丘之象。鐵葉為衣。舉身火燃。以鐵鉢盛熱鐵丸食。乃問佛。佛言。此眾生迦葉佛時。作比丘。好起諍訟鬪亂眾僧作諸口舌。令不和合。先住者厭惡捨去。未來者不來緣。斯罪故。已入地獄中。受無量苦。餘罪今受此身（九入眾高識可以此箴）。

The Saṃyuktāgama says: 'When the Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī, Maudgalyāyana saw a being with a huge body in the likeness of a monk, wearing iron plates as robes, his whole body ablaze with fire, eating glowing-hot iron pellets from an iron bowl. He then asked the Buddha. The Buddha said: "In the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, this being was a monk who was fond of stirring up disputes, causing turmoil among the saṅgha, and gossiping to make them disunited. Those who had previously dwelt there grew disgusted and left, while those who had not yet arrived did not come. Due to these sins, he already fell into hell and suffered immeasurable torment; as a remainder of his sins, he now receives this body." (Those who dwell in the assembly with high discernment may take this as a needle of warning.)'
