The Scripture of Bo says (Bo was the Buddha's name when he was the royal preceptor to the king of the country of Landan in his causal stage): Bo said to the king: 'Friends are of four kinds: First, like a flower friend—meaning when it is fresh, one sticks it in one's hair, but when it withers, one casts it away on the ground; attaching to one when seeing wealth and status, but abandoning one in poverty and hardship, this is it. Second, like a balance friend—meaning when an object is heavy, the head tilts down, and when the object is light, it tilts up; respectful when receiving something, but disdainful when receiving nothing, this is it. Third, like a mountain friend—for instance, like a golden mountain where birds and beasts gather, their feathers and fur reflecting the radiance; being noble, he can bring glory to others, sharing joy in wealth and happiness, this is it. Fourth, like the earth friend—all the hundred grains and wealth rely on it, giving, providing, nourishing, and protecting, with profound kindness and not considering it a virtue, this is it (the former two friends should not be held dear).'
