僧祇律云。國王大臣到寺聽將僧物祗待次及工匠惡賊於僧有損益者。佛聽將僧物看待無罪非俗人合消但為知事人不祗待恐於佛法有損故○五分律云俗人入寺值僧食次不供乃起謗佛許與食仍須用好器物供之。

The Sengqi lü states: "When kings and great ministers arrive at a monastery, it is permitted to take the Saṃgha's property to treat them; next, as for craftsmen and wicked bandits who can bring harm or benefit to the Saṃgha, the Buddha permits taking the Saṃgha's property to host them without offense. It is not that laypeople are entitled to consume it, but only that if the officers do not host them, it is feared that harm will come to the Buddhadharma." The Wufen lü states: "When laypeople enter a monastery and encounter the monks' mealtime, if they are not provided for, they will give rise to slander. The Buddha permits giving them food, yet it must still be served using good utensils."
