The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "Without karman, [one may not on this ground] perform Saṃgha transactions. If one performs them, one incurs an offense of exceeding the Dharma." The Four-Part Vinaya Abridged and Supplemented Karman states: "Boundaries are of three kinds: first, the boundary that encompasses the Saṃgha, which gathers persons together into the same place so that there is no offense of a split assembly; second, the boundary that encompasses robes, which assigns robes to a person so that there is no offense of separation from one's robes; third, [the boundary] that encompasses food to screen the Saṃgha so that there is no offense of overnight storage and cooking. Such is the fundamental intent." It also says: "The great boundary is of three kinds: first, where both persons and the Dharma are the same; second, where both the Dharma and food are the same; third, where the Dharma is the same but food is distinct. The first was the original regulation, and the latter two were opened separately according to circumstances (a boundary means the division of sections, the definition of limits, and the maintenance [of the Dharma])."
