The Vinaya says: "After the Elder Anāthapiṇḍada built the monastery, he thought: 'If it is not painted in colors, it will not be dignified.' He then reported this to the Buddha. The Buddha said: 'As you wish.' Not knowing what things to paint, the Buddha said: 'On the two jambs of the gate, you should paint yakṣas holding clubs. Next, on one side, paint the Great Transformation. Next, on the other side, paint the wheel of life and death of the five destinies. Under the eaves, paint scenes of past lives (jātaka). On the two jambs of the Buddha shrine, paint yakṣas holding garlands. In the lecture hall, paint an expounder of the Dharma. In the refectory, paint a yakṣa holding cakes. On the storehouse door, paint a yakṣa holding jewels. In the water hall, paint a dragon king holding a vase. In the bathhouse and fire hall, paint the divine messengers. In the scripture and Dharma hall, paint bodhisattvas together with the aspects of hell. In the infirmary, paint the scene of the Buddha personally attending to a sick monk. At the latrines, paint the aspect of a dead corpse. In the monks' hall, paint the aspect of white bones.' (The divine messengers: some say the five divine messengers, or say the five officials, which are birth, old age, sickness, death, and prison in the present life.)"
