3.300

根本目得伽論云。佛言若佛形像。泥塑虧損。苾芻生疑。不敢修飾。佛言或增大。或可相似。隨意而作諸彩畫壁。不分明者。應可拂除。更為新畫。

The Mūlasarvāstivāda-mātṛkā says: "The Buddha said: 'If an image of the Buddha made of molded clay is damaged, and the bhikṣus have doubts and do not dare to repair it, the Buddha said: they may enlarge it, or make it similar, doing so as they wish. As for painted walls that are unclear, they should be wiped clean and painted anew.'"
