分別功德論云。祇園有比丘病經六年優波梨往問所須。答唯思酒優波梨曰。待我問佛遂至園問佛有比丘病思酒為藥。不審可否。佛言。我所制法除病苦者。優波梨復往索酒令飲病尋平復重為說法得羅漢果。佛讚優波梨汝問此事使比丘病瘥又使得道。

The Fenbie gongde lun (Treatise on the Discrimination of Merit) states: In the Jetavana, a monk was ill for six years. Upāli went to inquire what he needed. He replied: "I crave only wine." Upāli said: "Wait for me to ask the Buddha." Thereupon he went to the grove and asked the Buddha: "There is a monk who is ill and desires wine as medicine; I wonder whether it is permissible?" The Buddha said: "My precepts are to eliminate the suffering of disease." Upāli went again, obtained wine, and had him drink it; his illness immediately subsided. He expounded the Dharma to him again, and he attained the fruit of an arhat. The Buddha praised Upāli: "By your asking about this matter, you made the monk's illness cure and also made him attain the Way."
