Nowadays, when monks fall ill, they bring out their robes and bowls, auction them off, and donate them to the Saṅgha, calling this "forfeiture" (shed堕). This merely uses the name without grasping its reality. The Chuyao yi says: The Sanskrit term niḥsargika was formerly translated as "forfeiture and falling" (shed堕). It is one of the names of the offenses of the six groups, meaning that through material goods one generates an offense of greedy and arrogant mind, and is forcibly made to forfeit them to the Saṅgha. As translated in the Śabdavidyā, it is "complete forfeiture," meaning forfeiting wealth, forfeiting the mind, and forfeiting the offense. If not completely forfeited, it still results in mutual defilement.
