The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: It means when the lifespan is exhausted. The Saṃyuktāgama states: The separation of the three dharmas—lifespan, warmth, and consciousness—is called death. The Weishi shu states: When the body breaks down and life ends, about to enter the characteristic of cessation, only then is it named the condition of death; this is because according to the Mahāyāna school, the characteristic of cessation belongs to the past. A verse in the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra states:
"It makes no distinction between poor and rich, young, robust,
And old age;
Whether householders or renunciants,
None are not destroyed by death."
