The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "If one wishes to seek the joy of extinction, one should train in the methods of the śramaṇa." The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says:
"All conditioned phenomena are impermanent;
This is the dharma of arising and ceasing.
When arising and ceasing have ceased,
Extinction is joy."
A treatise states: As for "extinction is joy," if one says that the cessation of dharmas is joy, this meaning is not so. Why is that? Because there is present cessation which is the residue of what has already ceased in the past; because there is residue, it is not joy. If one says that the cessation of present arising is joy, this meaning is not so. Why is that? Because there is future arising which is the residue of present arising; because there is residue, it is not joy. If one says that future arising is permanent, this meaning is not so; what arises must cease, and therefore it is not joy. Only if one can cause what should arise in the future, the dharmas of arising and ceasing, to be unable to arise—only that may be considered joy. This is the correct meaning.
