The Zenghui ji says: "Monks do not wear caps or headdresses, but sometimes use turbans. One should use a full bolt of coarse brownish cloth. Master Du calls it a cloth cap. Use cloth five feet and three inches long: two feet and five inches long at the back, and two feet and eight inches long in front. Fold it, then sew half of the two rear edges, curving the two corners slightly to make it rounded at the top. Measure from the hairline in front and slit straight downward to reveal the eyes, nose, and mouth; it must not be cut completely open, nor made excessively small. All edges should be neatly hemmed."
