The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: When the Buddha attained extinction, the śrāvaka disciples all wept. Those who had not yet abandoned desire rolled upon the ground, beating their chests and crying aloud. These were all because their grief and anguish were extreme, and they were unaware of their own bodies. / The Four-Part Vinaya says: A nun who beats her chest and wails commits a niḥsargika-prāyaścittika for each instance; a monk commits a duṣkṛta. / The Five Hundred Questions says: When a monk's master dies, he must not raise his voice in loud weeping, but should shed tears softly. / Generally, when a Buddhist disciple's master dies, or both parents pass away, pain naturally arises in the heart; how could they not weep? However, they must not let loose their voices, go to elaborate lengths, or utter lamentations, crying out to the "Blue Heavens" or speaking of their "sins and transgressions." They should solely let forth a plaintive and sorrowful sound.
