尚書大傳云。祭者。察也。察至也。言人事室於神也。釋名云。奠停也。言停久也。凡釋氏之喪。不宜效俗。可稱時藥香華供養（時藥即食也）。

The Shangshu dachuan says: "Sacrifice (jì) means inspection (chá). It inspects their arrival, meaning human affairs reach the spirits." The Shiming says: "An offering (diàn) means pausing (tíng), signifying remaining for a long time." In general, Buddhist funerary rites should not imitate secular customs; they may be termed offerings of timely medicine, incense, and flowers (timely medicine means food).
