The Nanshan Commentary says: "The upādhyāya and ācārya spread couches and sit outside the curtain, waiting for visitors to come and offer condolences. Junior fellow students spread straw and stand; senior ones sit upon the straw." (The upādhyāya and ācārya are the two masters of the deceased. The junior and senior fellow students are the disciples of the deceased.) The Funeral Rites says: "The personal disciples ordained by him weep inside the curtain; those who received teachings weep outside the curtain. Whenever a monk comes to offer condolences, they weep and prostrate; when a layperson comes to offer condolences, they weep but do not prostrate. If a monk loses his parents and goes to the secular home to receive condolences, his ritual must not mingle among men and women; he must spread straw or a mat in front of the hall outside the curtain, facing east and sitting. When someone offers condolences, he folds his hands, bows his head, and weeps sorrowfully, without using words such as 'my sins and transgressions.' When no one is offering condolences, he recites sūtras and recollected the Buddha."
