In Tianzhu there are four: First, water burial, meaning casting [the body] into rivers to feed fish and turtles. Second, fire burial, meaning piling firewood to burn it. Third, earth burial, meaning burying it by a riverbank so that it rots quickly. Fourth, forest burial, meaning placing it exposed in a cold forest to feed birds and beasts. (A cold forest is the charnel ground in the Western Regions. The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: "Because there are many dead corpses, whoever enters feels terror and their hair chills; hence it is called a cold forest." Calling it shituolin [śītavana] today is an error [for śītavana/śmaśāna]).
