Candrottarā-dārikā asked Śāriputra: "Where should a disciple of the Buddha abide?" He answered: "They should abide in nirvāṇa." Now, after a monk shaves his hair and dons the robes, he is called in Sanskrit a śrāmaṇera, which in the language of the Tang means "seeking extinction." When he receives the precepts, he is called an upasampanna, which in the language of the Tang means "nearing perfection." Perfection and extinction are both nirvāṇa; therefore, where a Buddhist disciple returns upon death has nirvāṇa as its fruit.
