The *Vinayamātṛkā* states: "The entire monastery shall join in escorting the funeral." The commentary states: "It causes them to contemplate impermanence and give rise to revulsion." (Nowadays, when a monk in a Chan residence dies, regardless of seniority or status as host or guest, the drum is sounded to make a general summons to escort the funeral; this is based on this vinaya.) The *Vinaya* states: "The bhikṣus escorting the funeral may have one who is capable chant the *Anityatā-sūtra* and recite verses to make vows for his sake." (This text resembles the "ten recitations" practiced in the mountains.) The *King Śuddhodana-parinirvāṇa-sūtra* states: "When King Śuddhodana's life ended, he was placed in a coffin of the seven treasures. The Buddha and Nanda stood reverently in front; Ānanda and Rāhula were behind. The Buddha, considering that in the future there would be violent and unfilial persons who would not repay the deep kindness of their parents, personally carried the coffin. At that time, the great trichiliocosm trembled in six ways. The Four Heavenly Kings then took the Buddha's place in carrying the coffin. The Buddha then held an incense burner and led the way in front of the coffin." (Nowadays, when Śākya disciples escort their parents' funeral, they may follow this sūtra, guiding the way before them according to the Buddha's example, to generate goodness in people's hearts.)
