曲禮云。孤子當室。謂年未三十也。壯有室。有代親之端。不為孤也。今見釋子稱孤。弟子不然也。五杉云。孝院小師者宜也。孝謂喪孝之院。若俗云。孝堂非自代語也。若居大寺院房者。亦可稱之。

The *Quli* states: "When an orphaned son manages the household, it means his age is under thirty." When grown and having a household, having the role of succeeding the parents, one is not called "the bereaved." Nowadays one sees Śākya disciples calling themselves "the bereaved"; as disciples, this is not correct. The *Wushan* states: "It is suitable to refer to the 'junior master of the mourning compound.' 'Mourning' refers to the compound for mourning and bereavement, like what the secular world calls a 'mourning hall'; it is not an expression for taking the parent's place. If one resides in the quarters of a large monastery, one may also call oneself this."
