On the fifteenth day of the second month, the day of the Buddha's nirvāṇa, monastics and laypeople throughout the realm organize gatherings and make offerings; this is the matter of a memorial day. In secular rites, a gentleman cultivates lifelong filial piety, which refers to the memorial day. It is also called the "day of displeasure," because one does not drink or make merry. Some call it the "taboo day" (*huiri*); some call it the "distant day" (*yuanri*). (Calling it "distant day" still confuses it with the *Quli*'s 'funeral matters first choose a distant day'.) When a Śākya disciple's master dies, it may be called the "day of returning to extinction," because the Śākyas have no taboos.
