These are words addressed to the Buddha, simply conveying the intention behind the vegetarian feast. Although a deceased master is venerable, when facing the Buddha, one must call him by name. The rites state: "Before the lord, one does not observe taboos; before the father, the son uses his personal name," clarifying that one does not dare observe taboos before the venerable. As in the vinaya, when Śāriputra entered extinction, his disciple, the śrāmaṇera Cunda, came and addressed the Buddha, saying: "My upādhyāya Śāriputra has passed away." The *Wushan* states: "The junior master [so-and-so], on behalf of the initiating upādhyāya [so-and-so], offers one midday vegetarian feast to the present Saṅgha on [such-and-such] day, to adorn the ground of recompense, or the path of awakening, and so forth." One must not use hollow words and extravagant ornamentation, bringing false speech transgressions upon oneself.
