The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: 'All scallions, Chinese chives, leeks, and garlic are foul, defiled, and impure; they can obstruct the noble path and also obstruct pure worldly places, not to mention the pure lands of the Buddhas.' ○ The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'If one eats scallions, leeks, garlic, and Chinese chives, one shall be reborn in painful places.' ○ The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: 'These five kinds of pungent roots arouse lust when eaten cooked, and increase anger when eaten raw. In such worlds, even if a person who eats pungent roots can expound the twelve limbs of scriptures, devas and humans of the ten directions will despise his foul stench and all keep far away from him. Various hungry ghosts, while he eats, will lick his lips and mouth; he will constantly dwell with ghosts, his merit and virtue will diminish day by day, and he will permanently gain no benefit.'
