The Saṃyuktāgama says: The Buddha addressed the monks, 'You should dwell respectfully; you should constantly bind your minds and constantly maintain awe and caution. Why is that? If a monk is not respectful, does not bind his mind, and has neither awe nor caution, yet wishes to make his deportment complete, that is impossible. If deportment is not fully prepared, and one wishes to bring the dharmas of training to completion, that is impossible. If the dharmas of training are not complete, and one wishes to make the five-part Dharma-body fully accomplished, that is impossible. If the five-part Dharma-body is not fully accomplished, and one wishes to attain nirvāṇa without remainder, that is impossible. Therefore, monks, you should diligently learn respect, bind your minds, and maintain awe and caution.'
