This is the eleventh factor among the eleven wholesome mental factors. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra states: 'Valiant boldness is its nature.' The commentary says: 'Being valiant without cowardice is to stimulate oneself; being bold without fear is to endure toil and fatigue.' The Saṃghāṭa-sūtra says: 'If one wishes to seek nirvāṇa, one must exert diligent vigor.' The preface to the Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'All Venerable Ones, for the sake of the Way, must single-mindedly exert diligent vigor. Why is this? Because all Buddhas, through single-minded diligent vigor, attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi—how much more so for the other wholesome teachings of the Way!' The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'There are two kinds of vigor: physical vigor is minor, while mental vigor is major, because the Buddha taught that mental karma is great.'
