The Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra states: "In Sanskrit, it is called manuṣya. Because they are able to reflect with the mind and observe what they do, or because they have much arrogance, or because they are able to quiet and pacify the mind, they are called humans (ren)." The Abhidharma-śāstra states: "Why is the human path called manuṣya? It has eight meanings: first, intelligence; second, superiority; third, subtlety of mind; fourth, correct awareness; fifth, superior wisdom; sixth, the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood; seventh, being proper vessels for the noble path; eighth, being governed by deeds of intelligence."
