The Fayuan says: “Nowadays there are persons of shallow learning who claim their wisdom surpasses the multitude. They give rise to great arrogance, conduct themselves with wild unconstraint, look down on everything, and think they encompass heaven and earth. They sit cross-legged with outstretched legs before masters and elders, and shout and domineer at the side of venerable ones. The Way is rooted in harmony; deference and compliance constitute the Saṅgha. When mind and demeanor are contrary and perverse, how can they become a treasure? Beware of this!”
