The Ten-Recitation Vinaya says: Bowl, half-bowl, large kuànduō (kuàn is pronounced chu, duō is pronounced zi; the Commentary on the Sounds and Meanings of the Scriptures says: a small bowl within the bowl, used to assist the bowl), and small kuànduō (the Mahāsāṃghika is the same). The Four-Part Vinaya says: The kuànduō goes into the small bowl, the small bowl into the middle bowl, and the middle bowl into the large bowl. (What this Vinaya calls the small bowl is the large kuànduō of the Ten-Recitation Vinaya; the middle bowl is the half-bowl. Comparing the various vinayas, the four items can be seen. Today they are called xiàzi; xià has the fanqie xun-jie. Kuàn says it is a kind of iron, not a vessel).
