All wealth, nobility, poverty, lowliness, beauty, ugliness, gain, and loss are seeds of wholesome and unwholesome karma created by oneself in the past, yielding the general and particular, dependent and primary retribution. They are all transformed by the objective aspect (nimittabhāga) of the eighth consciousness. Therefore it is said: 'Once the objective aspect is determined, ghosts and spirits cannot alter it.' The Upāsakaśīla-sūtra states: 'The wise clearly know that this is karmic fruition; how could one say that it is made by seasons, asterisms, or Īśvara? If it were due to causes and conditions of seasons and asterisms, there are people in the world born at the same time and under the same asterism; how is it that one experiences suffering and one experiences joy, one is male and one is female?' The Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra states: 'Wholesome and unwholesome karma are created by sentient beings themselves; they are not made by the asterisms.'"
