The Dharmapada Sūtra says: 'The Buddha said: "If a śramaṇa does not practice diligence to restrain body, speech, and mind, the defilements of the three poisons fill his breast, like foot-washing water that can never be reused (meaning it cannot be used for food)." It also says: "Although being a śramaṇa, if his mouth lacks honesty and faith, his mind is stubborn and unyielding, and he has acquired an evil reputation, he is also like a foot-washing basin, unfit to hold food (a zaopan is a vessel for washing feet)."'
