The Damamūka-nidāna Sūtra says: 'The bhikṣu contemplates the impermanence of limitless saṃsāra in the twelve sense bases. He also contemplates the sufferings of the hells, as well as the animals mutually destroying each other, and the hungry ghosts oppressed by many sufferings of hunger and thirst. He contemplates humans rushing about in the four directions, and the decay in heaven. Thus the sufferings of body and mind in the five destinies have no place of joy. Contemplating these five aggregates as impermanent, suffering, empty, non-self, and unreal—just as an empty village has no inhabitants, so too these five aggregates are all empty and without self. With the fire of impermanence burning all the worlds, the disciples of the Buddhas constantly perform this contemplation; how could any defilement arise?'
