The Sūtra on Repaying Kindness says: 'When people are born into the world, disasters arise from the mouth. You should guard your tongue more strictly than a fierce fire. A fierce fire can burn one lifetime; an evil mouth burns countless lifetimes. A fierce fire burns worldly wealth; an evil mouth burns the seven noble treasures. Therefore, for all sentient beings, disaster arises from the mouth. The mouth and tongue are the axe that hews the body.' (The seven noble treasures are: 1. Faith; 2. Diligence; 3. Morality; 4. Conscience and shame; 5. Hearing; 6. Contemplation; 7. Concentration and wisdom. The Yingluo Jing says: 'They are called treasures because they provide the means to achieve buddhahood.')
