Today this is called xingjiao (foot-travel), but its source has not been seen. The Vinaya says: 'As the World-Honoured One said: If five dharmas are accomplished, and five summer retreats are completed, one may leave tutelage and wander among the world. The five dharmas are: 1. Knowing offenses; 2. Knowing non-offenses; 3. Knowing light offenses; 4. Knowing grave offenses; 5. Regarding the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, well understanding what is permissible and prohibited, and being able to uphold and recite it (the Prātimokṣa Sūtra is the code of monastic precepts).' Upāli asked the Buddha: 'If someone has completed four summer retreats and mastered the five dharmas, may he wander?' The Buddha said: 'He may not; five summer retreats are the fixed measure.' He also asked: 'If someone has completed five summer retreats but has not mastered the five dharmas, may he?' The Buddha said: 'He may not; accomplishing the five dharmas is the fixed measure.'
