Daoxuan's Nanshan Commentary says: 'First, outside the door, settle your mind in tranquility in advance. The Vinaya says: using five dharmas: 1. A compassionate mind (since the saṅgha includes both ordinary beings and sages, whose conduct ranges through coarse and fine, one must have a compassionate mind, respecting reputations, valuing the Dharma, and honoring people). 2. One should be humble, like a dust-cloth (ceding what is upright to others and taking what is crooked upon oneself; always examining one's own faults and not speaking of another's shortcomings. The commentary says: A cloth can absorb dirt onto itself to make things clean). 3. One should know when to rise and sit: if seeing a senior monk, one should not remain seated; if seeing a junior monk, one should not stand up (in the assembly one should rise and sit in a timely manner). 4. In the midst of the saṅgha, do not engage in miscellaneous talk about worldly matters; either preach the Dharma oneself or request another to preach it (the assembly relies on the Dharma; movements must have order). 5. If seeing improper things in the saṅgha and one's mind cannot bear them, one should remain silent (since there is no good companion, bringing it up must have its proper time; thus one should patiently remain silent and tentatively conform to the saṅgha's affairs).'
