Nowadays, when a monk stays at a dwelling place, it is called "hanging the staff". Whenever an Indian bhikṣu travels, he must carry a pewter staff (khakkhara). Carrying the staff has twenty-five deportments. Whenever he reaches a room, it must not touch the ground, but must be hung upon a wall hook. Hence it is called hanging the staff.
