First, the monastery supervisor (karmadāna/vihārasvāmī). The Huiyao says: '"Supervisor" is a title for overall management. The reason he is not called the Monastery Prior is out of deference and respect to the Elder.' Second, the rector (karmadāna). Here translated as 'rejoicing the assembly'; the Vinaya calls him the 'assigner of duties'. Third, the chief cook (tenzo). The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: 'Assigning in sequence the bedding and seats.' This is one of the nine duties managing the saṅgha. Fourth, the director of affairs (shisui). The Scripture of Three Thousand Dignified Demeanours states that one possessing ten virtues is worthy to serve as director of affairs (the text is extensive and not recorded). Nowadays, he merely manages the garden workers and the director's levies. (The above four persons do not use disciples of the local monastery; all are jointly selected from among the ocean-like assembly of the ten directions who have the mind for the Way, capable bodies, and understand cause and effect. Striking the ghaṇṭā, it is said that the assembly requests them. Their employment has no fixed person; if one's mental and physical strength grows weary, upon notifying the assembly he returns to the hall, and another capable person is invited.)
