This is now the standard practice in Chan residences. The Sengqi lü states: "The World-Honoured One, for five reasons, inspected the monks' rooms once every five days: first, fearing that disciples might cling to conditioned matters; second, fearing that they might cling to worldly talk; third, fearing that they might cling to sleep; fourth, to look after sick monks; fifth, to cause young bhikṣus, upon seeing the Buddha's deportment, to also give rise to joy." (Regarding the word liao: The Tangyun states that those of the same official rank are called liao. The present meaning in Chan residences derives from multiple people dwelling together to manage a single duty, hence called a liao. It is also intended to distinguish it from the Vinaya term for living quarters.)
