The Daśādhyāya Vinaya states: One should visit the sick at appropriate times, explaining for them what is the Way and what is not the Way, awakening their wisdom, or praising them according to their prior practice to cause them to generate joy (there is a passage in the Nanshan chao). Because at the point of death, delusive karma gathers competitively and most people have no resolute will—this being the heavenly separation between ascent and descent according to good and evil in this single lifetime—one should point out the titles of sutra scrolls with one's hand, bring a Buddha image before them for face-to-face contemplation, constantly speak words of the Dharma, and recite the Buddha's name, being careful never to transmit worldly matters.
