Jiang means crimson color. Fan Ye's Hou Han shu says: ‘Ma Rong was worldly and followed his nature, untrammeled by the rules of classicists. He often sat in a high hall behind crimson curtains, instructing students in front while female musicians were arranged in the back.’ It was also called 'Ma's curtain.' Furthermore, the Jin shu records that Lady Xuanwen, née Song, mother of Wei Cheng, established a lecture hall and taught students from behind a crimson gauze curtain. (Nowadays, disciples of the Śākya clan referring to 'crimson curtains' and the like is inappropriate; the wise should reflect on this.)”
