The Baolin zhuan says: ‘The Fifth Patriarch of the Western Regions, Upagupta, had a stone chamber eighteen cubits long (a cubit being one chi eight cun; thirty-two chi and four cun from north to south) and twelve cubits wide (twenty-one chi and six cun from east to west). Whenever one of his students attained the Way, he threw a four-cun tally into the chamber. The tallies eventually filled the chamber. When Upagupta passed into extinction, the tallies in the chamber were cremated with him.’”
