Du [You] states: "In the twentieth year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang, an edict permitted official and commoner households to visit graves on Cold Food Day, sharing the rites of bowing and sweeping." Nowadays, Śākya disciples must not adopt this secular custom, so as to avoid meat, alcohol, and the mingling of men and women, which invites criticism and suspicion. If one must go to the graves of one's two parents, one must burn incense, or consecrate earth or food with dhāraṇīs to scatter at the grave site, or recite the *Uṣṇīṣavijayā* and so forth in a loud voice, so that the subterranean spirits receive benefit. One must not sit together with relatives, eating, drinking, and merrymaking. (The rites state: "When weeping, one does not sing.")
