The Vinaya says: “Expounding means the function of making manifest and guiding.” In current usage it is called jiang (lecturing). The Shuowen says: “Jiang means to harmonize, explain, discuss, and debate.” The Guangya says: “It means to read aloud.” Gu Yewang says: “It means explaining, discussing, and conversing; it means instruction.”
