The Vinaya Samādhi Sūtra states: "First, studying without understanding skillful means, holding teachers and friends in contempt, lacking single-mindedness, and frequently changing one's intentions. Second, studying without vigor, lacking the power of the Way, merely craving fame and reputation, and hoping for others to respect and honor oneself. Third, serving a master while studying without mindfulness of diligent hardship through which attainment should be reached, being superficially pretentious and arrogant. Fourth, while studying the supreme Way, clinging instead to perverse arts, comparing them to the profound sūtras of the Buddha and claiming that the Ways are equal." The Bodhisattva Precepts Sūtra states: "Gathering disciples for the sake of fame and reputation is called being a disciple of Māra."
