Its meaning is yearning and craving. The Saṃyuktāgama states: "The Buddha said: 'Whatever suffering arises for sentient beings, it all has desire as its root.'" The Ekottarikāgama states: "Desire generates all afflictions; desire is the root of the arising of suffering." The Yogācārabhūmi states: "Among all afflictions, greed is the most prominent; and within greed, craving of desire is the most prominent, because it generates all sufferings." The Abhidharmasamuccaya states: "When this phenomenon arises, its characteristic is not serene; because this arises, the continuum of body and mind proceeds in non-serenity." (By virtue of this meaning, these two phenomena are grouped together and termed 'restlessness', taking the sense of instability).
