The Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: "First, evil desire: if a monk desires to be the leader of all assemblies, to cause all the sangha to follow him, to cause the fourfold assembly to make offerings, respect, praise, and honor him, and if he preaches the Dharma, that all will believe and accept it, and to cause himself to obtain copious robes, food, dwellings, and so forth. Second, great desire: if a monk gives rise to a desire, wishing to cause the fourfold assembly to know that he has attained the first stage up to the four unobstructed knowledges, for the sake of gain and offerings. Third, desire for desires: if a monk desires to be born in the Brahmā heaven, or into a Kṣatriya family, for the sake of attaining sovereignty."
