揭路荼 (A Sanskrit term, a crude and impure transcription. The correct Sanskrit pronunciation is garuḍa. In ancient times it was translated as jiālóuluó [garuḍa]. That is, the golden-winged bird; it is also called the wondrous-winged bird. According to the Qishi yinben jing, the golden-winged birds and the nāgas each have the four modes of birth, namely egg-born, womb-born, moisture-born, and transformationally born. However, the egg-born have little strength and only eat egg-born nāgas. The transformationally born have the greatest supernatural power and can devour [nāgas of] all four modes of birth. When they wish to devour nāgas, they flap their two wings to part the ocean water, catch the nāgas in their beaks, and swallow them whole into their crops while the nāgas are not yet dead; hence this bird is also called the 'great crop bird'. It flies up into a kūṭa-śālmali tree, then vomits them out and pecks and eats them. When being pecked, [the nāgas] utter terrifying cries and endure extreme suffering. This bird is also named the 'nāgas' enemy'. Both its back and its two wings are entirely golden in color, hence its name).
