Death and mourning (亾喪: the first character is 亡. The commentary on the *Classic of Poetry* says: "*Wang* means absence." Gu Yewang says: "To lose; to die." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "An omen; composed of 人 and 𠃊 [pronounced *yǐn*]. 𠃊 has the meaning of hiding." In the sūtra it is written 亡, a vulgar graph. The second is *s[āng]-l[àng]*. The *Book of Documents* says: "The common people mourned as if losing their own father and mother." The *Book of Rites* says: "Trifling with people causes the loss of virtue; trifling with objects causes the loss of purpose." Zheng Xuan's commentary says: "*Wang* means losing one's rank." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "To perish; composed of 哭 with 亾 phonetic. The character 哭 is composed of 犬 and 吅 [pronounced *xuān*]; an ideogram, and also an associative transfer. In current clerical script, 犬 and 亾 are erroneously transformed into 衣, producing 喪; or written as [(口*〡*人)/(企-止+(┌/┌/─))], both of which depart far from the original; be aware of this).
