偏袒（壇爛反順時借用字也說文云衣縫解也音為丈莧反今非此義案經云偏袒者以右髆去衣露肉也彼方謂䖍敬之儀極也從衣旦聲說文從肉從亶作膻詩曰膻錫暴虎從肉亶聲）。

Baring one shoulder (偏袒: [袒 has] the fanqie tan + lan, a borrowed character according to contemporary usage; the Shuowen jiezi says that it means clothes coming undone at the seam, pronounced with the fanqie zhang + xian, which is not the meaning here; examining the sūtra, 'baring one shoulder' means removing the robe from the right shoulder to bare the flesh, which in that land is considered the height of reverent ritual; it takes its classifier from 衣 "clothing" with 旦 as phonetic; the Shuowen jiezi writes it with 肉 "meat" and 亶 as 膻; the Shijing says: 'Baring the chest and seizing the tiger', where it takes 肉 with 亶 as phonetic).
