Able to cut (能斷: [duàn is] the fanqie tuán + mǎo [團夘], a falling-rising tone character, or taking the falling tone is also admissible. The Yijing says, 'He split [duàn] wood to make pestles.' Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says that duàn means to sever. The Shuowen says it means to cut through; it is composed of jīn [斤] and jue [𢇍], pronounced jué, which is the ancient form of the character jué [絕, sever]. In current sūtra texts it is written as duàn [斷], which is an abbreviation in clerical script, or adopted for convenience and ease, and is not the orthodox form. The orthodox character for 'cut through' is jié [截]. Regarding this single Diamond Sūtra, it is precisely fascicle 577 in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra, being the 'Vajracchedikā Division' [能斷金剛分]. The canon catalogue states that because it might be confused with the title of a later sūtra, it was listed again. Its sounds and meanings have already been provided in full in the earlier primary text of the Great Sūtra and are therefore not set out again here; please consult the preceding text).
